The Nissan Navara is another ute tradies buy for work, but the finance is decided by how you will use it, how your business is set up and what the lender needs to see, not by the badge. This guide covers the questions tradies usually ask when financing a Navara: business or private use, buying through an ABN, chattel mortgage compared with a consumer car loan, new or used, dealer or private sale, low doc options, documents and balloon payments. It is general information and every lender applies its own criteria. We have deliberately left out prices, payloads, towing figures and specifications, which change by grade and model year. For those, use Nissan’s own site. For the broader picture, see our ute finance guide, and our pages on Toyota HiLux finance and Ford Ranger finance if you are comparing utes.

Short answer: how do you finance a Nissan Navara as a tradie?
Most tradies finance a ute in one of two ways: a business loan structure such as a chattel mortgage when it is bought mainly for business use, or a consumer car loan when it is mainly personal. Which one is available and which suits you depends on your ABN, how the ute will be used, your documents and the lender. A broker can compare lenders for the specific vehicle and your situation.
Personal use or business use?
This is the first decision because it shapes the loan type. A ute used mainly for business may suit a commercial structure, while one used mainly for private purposes is usually financed as a consumer loan. Many tradies use their ute for both, so lenders ask how much of the use is business. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances, so confirm it with your accountant before choosing a structure.

Buying a Navara through your ABN
Lenders commonly look at how long you have held your ABN, whether you are registered for GST and what your business earns. Requirements differ, and some lenders finance newer ABNs while others want a longer history. Our ABN car loan page and how to get an ABN car loan guide cover this in more detail.
New or used Navara
- New. Lenders usually find the value and age simple to assess. Nissan Australia’s Navara site listed four grades as at 21 October 2026 (Nissan Australia, Navara). Check grades, availability and pricing there, not here.
- Used. Lenders may set limits on vehicle age or kilometres, and the age of the ute at the end of the loan term can matter. Policies differ, so check the specific vehicle with your broker before you commit.
Dealer finance or arranging your own?
Dealers often arrange finance in-house, but you can arrange your own and compare. Moneysmart says you can compare car loans from your own bank, other lenders and dealerships, that dealer-arranged finance can involve several parties taking fees, and that you should ask who is involved and what fees apply before you sign. Lenders must give a comparison rate, which combines the interest rate and fees, and it is only useful when you compare loans with the same amount and term (Moneysmart, car loans, last updated 24 June 2026).
Buying a Navara privately
A private purchase means no dealer handling the paperwork. The lender will want to be satisfied about the seller and the vehicle, and you should run your own PPSR search on the VIN to check for finance owing. Not every lender finances private sales on the same terms, so ask early.
Low doc options for self-employed tradies
If you do not have full financials or tax returns ready, some lenders offer low doc or alternative-documentation options, subject to their criteria. They are not available from every lender and can come with different terms. See low doc car loans for self-employed tradies.
Documents lenders may ask for
- Photo ID and your ABN details
- Business and personal income evidence, such as tax returns, BAS, bank statements or an accountant’s letter, depending on the lender and doc type
- Details of the Navara: make, model, year, VIN, odometer and price
- A written quote or invoice, or a sale agreement for a private purchase
- Details of existing debts and living or business expenses
Deposits and balloon payments
Deposit and balloon requirements vary by lender, vehicle and borrower, and we do not state a universal figure. Moneysmart explains that with a balloon you pay part of the loan through regular repayments and a lump sum at the end. Repayments are smaller but the total cost is usually higher, and you should only choose one if you are confident you can pay the lump sum when it is due. To see the effect, use our ute finance calculator or the chattel mortgage calculator. Both give estimates only, not quotes.
Fit-out and tooling
If you plan to add a tray, canopy, toolboxes or racking, ask whether the lender will include them in the loan and whether they need to be on the invoice. Fit-outs added later may need separate finance, and what is allowed differs by lender. Also check how modifications interact with your insurance.
Frequently asked questions
Can I finance a Nissan Navara with an ABN?
Often, subject to lender criteria. Lenders look at your ABN history, GST registration and income. A broker can check which lenders suit your ABN and the specific ute.
Is a chattel mortgage better than a car loan for a Navara?
It depends on how you use the ute and how your business is structured. A chattel mortgage is a business structure, while a consumer loan suits mainly personal use. Ask your accountant about tax before choosing.
Can I get a Navara loan without full financials?
Some lenders offer low doc or alternative documentation, subject to their criteria and often on different terms. Availability varies, so ask a broker.
Can I finance a used Navara?
Often, yes. Lenders may set limits on age and kilometres, so check the lender’s policy for the specific vehicle before you commit.
Can I include a balloon payment?
Some lenders offer balloons on some loans. A balloon lowers repayments but generally increases total cost and leaves a lump sum due at the end.
Do I need a different loan for a Navara than for another ute?
Not by model alone. The loan depends on your use, ABN, documents and the lender’s policy for the vehicle’s age and type.
